EC set to increase tourist tax to repay post-COVID debt
The European Commission (EC) intends to increase the tourist tax for UK and US citizens in order to reduce the debt of 350bn Euros, incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, TASS reports citing the European edition of Politico
According to an internal note from the Polish presidency of the EU Council, ‘there is a possibility of a gradual increase of the fee, strengthening the long-term revenue potential’.
It is noted that the increase in tourist tax is one of the most popular topics to be discussed at the EC’s budget meeting on July 16th. Another EC representative told the newspaper that a ‘possible adjustment of the fee’ was being considered to take account of inflation.
Germany is a critic of this initiative. It believes that the measure could deter tourists from travelling to Europe.
