Belarus-Russia Union State MPs call for protection of historical truth

A statement on the protection of the historical truth and the preservation of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War memory adopted at the meeting of the 68th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia

The statement reads that the deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia advocate an irreconcilable struggle against the falsification of history, the prevention of the demolition of monuments, vandalism against the graves of Soviet soldiers, the revival of ideologies of exclusivity — Nazism, Russophobia, anti-Semitism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

"The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia must do everything to preserve the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945," the document reads. “We support and share initiatives related to the creation of a new architecture of equal and indivisible security that would reliably protect all states, taking into account each other's interests. The natural process associated with the formation of a multipolar world, with the strengthening of new centres of economic growth and influence, should contribute to strengthening peace and co-operation between countries and peoples. Preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 is the key to a peaceful future."

In addition, the proposal to establish a commission of the Parliamentary Assembly to oversee the preservation and protection of the historical memory was unanimously supported at the meeting. It will be chaired by Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly Vadim Ipatov (on the Belarusian side) and First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Ivan Melnikov (on the Russian side).

The MPs also agreed that the Great Heritage — Common Future international forum should be held annually. In 2026, it will be hosted by Belarus.
